Japan's Robot Supermodel Hits the Runway

Japan's Fashion Week hired a futuristic-looking model for its first runway show.
STORY:
Japans latest female humanoid robot kicked-off Tokyos Fashion Week.
Topmodel "HRP-4C" hit the runway powered on battery motors.
[Shuji Kajita, Director, Humanoid Robot Engineering]:
"We believe this is Japan's and, perhaps, the world's first humanoid robot to walk on two feet and resemble the average body type of a young Japanese woman."
And she passed her casting test with her 43 kg weight and her 1 meter 58 centimeter build.
And though she may resemble a Japanese animation character, her agent says she needs to work more on her expressions if she really wants to become a supermodel.
[Shuji Kajita, Director, Humanoid Robot Engineering]:
"Our robot can't move elegantly like the real models that are here today. It'll take another 20 to 30 years of research to make that happen!"
But she must be doing fine since she has earned herself a $2 million contract with the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology.

Watch out, Gisele, there's a new fashion phenom in town. Top model HRP-4C, another robotic humanoid, made her catwalk debut at a Tokyo fashion show in early 2009. At just over 5 feet tall and 95 pounds, HRP-4C is modeled after a typical Japanese female frame. Developed by Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, HRP-4C boasts 42 motion motors programmed to mimic the movements of real fashion models, as exhibited in her latest show for Japanese designer Yumi Katsura, to the beats of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean." Walk it girl!

Japan's Love Affair with Robots
With an aging population and an ever-growing need for more a bigger workforce, Japan spends more time and money on robotics research than any other nation.
The hottest couple in Japan right now just may be two baseball-playing robots. Unveiled by University of Tokyo researchers in July 2009, the robotic pitcher and batter can play against one another almost perfectly. The pitcher releases a strike-zone pitch 90% of the time, and though it only throws them at 24 mph, the batter hits the ball almost every time. Researchers hope to bump the pitching speed up to 93mph and throw in some curve balls and sliders soon.
